Ontario Cottage| 2023
Location : French River, Ontario, Canada
Progress : Completed

This contemporary summer cottage in Ontario, Canada was created as a family retreat that feels warm, inviting, and fully connected to its natural setting. The exterior uses dark timber to settle the building into the forested shoreline, while the interior features natural textures and soft tones that reflect the surrounding rocks, water, and pine trees.

The design works with the landscape rather than against it. The cottage is carefully placed among existing rock formations, and the use of exposed natural materials helps the home blend naturally with the site. Inspired by traditional lakeside architecture in the region, architect John Rooney shaped a clean and simple form with a bold overhang that creates a smooth transition between indoor and outdoor living spaces.

Inside, the main living area features an open kitchen and a spacious gathering room with a full wall of glass that frames expansive views of the lake. Natural light fills the space, creating a calm environment for family and friends to enjoy throughout the summer.

This project highlights thoughtful residential architecture, lakeside cottage design, sustainable site integration, and modern vacation home planning. It reflects a design approach focused on natural materials, strong indoor outdoor connections, and contemporary architectural solutions that celebrate the beauty of the landscape.
